Apart from offering visitors an exciting and novel method of travel, taking the Flying Dutchman funicular saves visitors an uphill walk from the car park to see the old lighthouse and enjoy the panoramic views.
The Flying Dutchman Funicular, also known as the Cape Point Funicular, is a funicular railway located at Cape Point. It is believed to be the only commercial funicular of its type in Africa, and takes its name from the local legend of the Flying Dutchman ghost ship.
The line runs from a lower station at the Cape Point car park, up an incline through dense fynbos to the upper lighthouse. The funicular leaves from the lower station every three minutes, comfortably accommodates 40 passengers per car, and can transport 450 persons to the upper lighthouse per hour, making it the ideal way to whisk closer to the lighthouse even during peak times.

Being able to buy the tickets ket in advance was fantastic as there was a very long line of people waiting to buy tickets at the station. Boarding process of the vehicle was very organised and loading was quick. The ride was very smooth and comfortable. Some of the windows could maybe have been cleaner to give a better view and maybe increased ventilation in the carriage as it misted/steamed up quickly. We really enjoyed our trip/ride and would recommend it to friends and family. I really enjoyed the museum and information in the building at the top level with history and explaining of the lighthouse and surrounding area. - Keith
Baie goed...sal weer gaan. - Johannes
A frustrating and unacceptable experience. The staff were arrogant and unhelpful, showing zero customer care or empathy. The infrastructure was equally poor---after transporting visitors to the top, the funicular broke down, leaving guests stranded with no ETA or alternative transport. Shockingly, an epileptic and hypertensive patient was forced to walk down the mountain due to this failure. A complete disregard for service and accessibility. Avoid. - Jitesh
