Activity Description

Apart from offering visitors an exciting and novel method of travel, taking the Flying Dutchman funicular saves visitors an uphill walk from the car park to see the old lighthouse and enjoy the panoramic views.

The Flying Dutchman Funicular, also known as the Cape Point Funicular, is a funicular railway located at Cape Point. It is believed to be the only commercial funicular of its type in Africa, and takes its name from the local legend of the Flying Dutchman ghost ship.

The line runs from a lower station at the Cape Point car park, up an incline through dense fynbos to the upper lighthouse. The funicular leaves from the lower station every three minutes, comfortably accommodates 40 passengers per car, and can transport 450 persons to the upper lighthouse per hour, making it the ideal way to whisk closer to the lighthouse even during peak times.

The Furnicular was so easy to book online and easy to use. Thank you for making our experience so smooth! We are a familu of four adults and two young children. - CATHERINE

Super! Quick way up. With a view. - Agnieszka

- Carmen

We had a great experience as a family of four. The online tickets helped us yo avoid long rows. Its very quick going up and we enjoyed the scenery very much. - Yvette

The reserve is beautiful and the staff at the Main Gate were very pleasant. We had booked our tickets online. We got there during load shedding time and were told that the funicular couldn't go up because there was no electricity. Not only that but the restaurant was closed too because of the lack of power. The parking lot had bus loads of tourists in it - you would think that someone in the parks board or tourism industry would have thought that a generator might be helpful during peak summer season! Staff were rude and unhelpful. Made no suggestions as to what we could do for the two hours that we needed to wait to use the Funicular. Our son suffers from arthritis and his joints were too sore to walk down, we dashed to the ticket office to buy a ticket to go down. The staff said that it was closed - this was 7 minutes before closing time. Staff refused to sell us a ticket, saying they were closed. Again rude and unhelpful. Eventually the funicular driver said he would take us down and we could pay at the bottom. I guess if you want the true South African experience this is worth a visit; it is a magnificent spot, a country showing it true beauty; and at the same time demonstrating quite clearly some of the reasons for its dysfunction. - Wendy
